What if the person who knew you best and loved you most forgot your face, and couldn't remember your name? A care facility is everyone's solution for what to do about Sara, but her husband, Jack, can't bear to live without her. He is committed to saving his marriage, his wife, and their life together from the devastation of Alzheimer’s disease. He and Sara retired years ago to the house of their dreams, and operated it as a Cape Cod bed and breakfast named Blue Hydrangeas. Jack has made an impossible promise He and Sara will stay together in their beautiful home no matter what the disease brings. However, after nine years of selfless caregiving, complicated by her progressing Alzheimer’s and his own failing heart, he finally admits he can no longer care for her at home. With reluctance, he arranges to admit her to an assisted living facility. But, on the day of admission, Sara is having one of her few good days, and he is unable to follow through. Instead, he takes them on an impulsive journey to confront their past and reclaim their future. In the end, he realizes that staying together at any cost is what truly matters.

I recently lost my mother to Alzheimer's after her 15 1/2 year battle with the disease. Of those years, she was in Assisted Living for 2 years and full nursing care facility for 3 1/2 years. My dad passed in 2009 and took magnificent care of mom for those first 10 years. In less than a week we lost him to lymphoma cancer and I was the chosen one. My sister had past 10 years earlier at age 49 to colon cancer and my brother still had his two boys home. My husband and I have an empty nest. So I moved mom to be close to me and I fed and assisted changings and bathing her with the lesser of resistance than the staff. She was admitted to assisted living 12/1/2009 and died in the nursing home 8/11/2015.

This book touches my heart because in so many ways, the disease is predictable enough that this author seems to be telling part of my family story. We don't own a B&B or live on Cape Cod, but similarities of the disease, the circumstance and of life are described by the author in such familiar instances whether you have been touched by Alzheimer's at the beginning of the read or not, you will understand the depths of the disease by the end. The author describes details which will parallel to your past or present coping with Alzheimer's as a caregiver. It's uncanny!

Take a look at this book and keep an open mind if Alzheimer's is something you know nothing about. I guarantee you will have a better understanding by the end. If you are in the trenches with Alzheimer's care currently, God bless you and take a few minutes each day and let this book be your journey allowing you to know you aren't alone, going crazy, or thinking you are the only one feeling this way.

I believed the first 4 months after the funeral that I was exempt from grief because I felt I was ready to welcome death at anytime. I believe I was meant to read this book, although I resisted the thought of reading about a disease I truly dislike, it was what I needed to let the grief release.

Thank you for writing this book.

Blue Hydrangeas an Alzheimer love story edition by Marianne Sciucco Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

In this heartwarming love story about an elderly couple, Jack Harmon is caregiver for his wife Sara who has Alzheimer's. At the onset of this terrible disease, having promised her that they would stay together in Cape Cod at their bed and breakfast, "Blue Hydrangeas," even with his own health failing, he refuses to put her in a nursing facility. However, as the disease progresses, he finally, yet reluctantly, agrees with Sara's doctor to admit her to an assisted living facility, but only with the understanding that it will be a one-week trial period.

On the day Sara is released from the hospital, Jack drives her to the facility but cannot bring himself to leave her there. So he takes a detour, and they end up in Provincetown where one of his worst nightmares comes true. The police are notified, and the elderly couple's son and daughter-in-law are frantic with worry trying to locate them. In the end, Jack and his son David are finally able to reach a mutual agreement that will allow the two seniors to stay together.

I enjoyed this story so much! It's bittersweet because after having spent so many happy and wonderful years together, this dear, sweet, elderly couple's (particularly the wife's) health is not what it used to be, but Jack is determined not to give up despite his own health problems. Also, since I read it in the aftermath of my mother's prolonged illness and subsequent death (four months ago), it especially touched my heart.

I recommend this book for young and older ones because we never know what life will throw at us. It is an insightful read that will shed light on some of the struggles that families face when dealing with a loved one who has Alzheimer's or really any other type of long-term illness.
Blue Hydrangeas is a beautifully written novel that tells the story of a man’s all-consuming love for his wife who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. It is also the story of how this terrible disease affects the entire network of family and friends that surrounds the affected person. Marianne Sciucco does not mention a personal connection with Alzheimer’s, but I’m sure she has dealt with it in her career as a nurse. She definitely writes about the dementia experience with the insight and sensitivity of one who has watched a loved one disappear slowly, one memory at a time.

The story is about more than the disease, though. Sciucco paints lovely word pictures of the Blue Hydrangeas Bed & Breakfast and of the love between Jack and Sara that is stronger than the trials they must face together. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the prequel that will be coming soon.
Imagine the feeling of walking into the home that you know so well and having the love of your life not recognize you even though you have been married 50+ years. Paul faces this issue as he has to decide if it is time for him to take Sara to live at an assisted living home where his wife can obtain around the clock care.

How do you decide to give up waking next to your spouse each day? When they have good days amongst the bad, how do you know when it is time? What do you do with yourself when the other person who helped to bring life into your home is no longer in residence?

Written by a nurse who worked with many patients, this book gives you a glimpse into a life torn asunder by this disease and the complexities of making these decisions. It also shows how the entire family is affected and needs to play a part in the decisions that need to be made.

A very real tale about love and the loss that this disease brings with it long before the life finally reaches its end.
